In a sense it is a good view of the year, though the view it presents is weirdly myopic. This one is critically acclaimed, which is a first, and written by a major German intellectual. So far the entries in the series have been fairly sporadic, but coming up to the first world war there is a positive flood of the things (then they immediately become sporadic again at the end of the war) – so quite a bit of reading to be done over the next few months. One part of this project which has surprised me in its scope is “books about years” – this has become something of an obsession, and having started, I’ve been working my way up to having a shelf full of them, which means I also need to read the things. 7/8/2023 The Psychoanalysis of Racism, Revolution and Nationalism by Richard A. KoenigsbergRead NowRevolution as a Struggle against Passivityģ. The Disease Within the Nation as a Projection of Malignant Internal Objects Racism and Revolution as a Wish to Eliminate the "Disease" from Within the Body of the NationĢ. The Country as a Projection of Infantile Narcissismġ. The Country, the Mother and Infantile NarcissismĤ. In the final chapter, Koenigsberg examines the dynamics of totalitarianism-an extreme form of nationalism promising omnipotence through identification with a "great human community." Refusing to abandon the dream of omnipotence, radical nationalists, racists and revolutionaries are willing to sacrifice freedom and individuality. What racists and revolutionaries have in common is belief that a particular class of people constitutes a "disease" within the body politic-that must be "removed" if the nation is to survive. Through analysis of the writings of Hitler, Lenin, Sri Aurobindo and others, Koenigsberg articulates core fantasies underlying the ideology of nationalism. Koenigsberg examines the idea of the nation as a sacred object saturating our day-to-day reality. Alexander and Damani Johnson wrote the pilot, which was directed by George Tillman, Jr. We prioritize the subsidization of our wealth over the alleviation of poverty, designing a welfare state that gives the most to those who need the least. In this landmark book, acclaimed sociologist Matthew Desmond draws on history, research, and original reporting to show how affluent Americans knowingly and unknowingly keep poor people poor. Those of us who are financially secure exploit the poor, driving down their wages while forcing them to overpay for housing and access to cash and credit. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages? The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy.
